mCapital unveils $1b Bangladesh fund plan

Star Business Report

mCapital, a private members-only network that connects the global diaspora with investment opportunities in Bangladesh, has launched its flagship “Dakchhe Bangladesh” initiative, announcing a $1 billion investment framework to channel non-resident Bangladeshi capital, expertise and global networks towards the country’s development.

The announcement was made at the inaugural “Invest Bangladesh” event in New York, attended by diaspora entrepreneurs, investors, business professionals and community leaders, according to a press release.

mCapital says it facilitates relationships and provides members with access to vetted investment opportunities, while members manage their own investments and due diligence.

At the event, Prof Muhammad Yunus highlighted the importance of connecting youth talent and modern technology with social business.

He called on the diaspora to support data centres for rural women, nursing colleges for skilled workforce development and technology-driven improvements in agricultural productivity.

Ashik Chowdhury, chairman of Invest Bangladesh, highlighted developments in Bangladesh’s economy and ongoing structural reforms aimed at attracting foreign investment, including solar power expansion, port logistics modernisation, new airport infrastructure and economic zones.

He encouraged foreign investors to visit Bangladesh and assess the business environment firsthand.

Ahsan H Mansur, chairman of mCapital and former governor of Bangladesh Bank, said the initiative aims to transform remittances into productive assets, allowing diaspora investors to own profitable, regulated assets in their own names.

The $1 billion framework will be structured across three specialised funds, targeting financial services, distressed assets and healthcare.

The Financial Services Fund will focus on fintech expansion, structural reforms in the banking sector and shariah-compliant digital banking.

The Distressed Asset Management Fund will focus on resolving non-performing loans (NPLs) and recovering distressed assets.

The Healthcare Impact Fund will focus on healthcare infrastructure, hospitals, a Healthcare City and digital healthcare through the Shukhee Platform in collaboration with Grameen.

The funds will operate under domestic and international legal frameworks, with independent advisory oversight and a two-year lock-in period. BRAC Bank will serve as the official trustee and custodian.

mCapital also plans to connect with non-resident Bangladeshis across 100 cities worldwide.
