4 officers withdrawn after DU students protest police assault in Suhrawardy Udyan
Four police personnel have been withdrawn from duty following protests by Dhaka University (DU) students demanding the removal of DMP Ramna Division Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam and the involved police personnel over allegations of police assault on students and journalists.
Confirming the development, DC Masud Alam told The Daily Star, “The four officers involved in the incident have been closed, and procedures for taking departmental action against them are underway. We are trying to identify two to three more personnel involved who used excessive force.”
He did not disclose the names or ranks of those withdrawn.
The move comes a day after an anti‑narcotics drive at Suhrawardy Udyan, led by DC Masud, during which police harassed and assaulted students and journalists. Videos of the incident generated much criticism.
This afternoon, DU students staged a demonstration in front of Shahbagh Police Station, demanding DC Masud’s removal, legal action against the officers involved, an end to unwarranted policing on campus and in the city, and the formation of an investigation committee.
