A leader of the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (Cucsu) was attacked with blades and razors on Monday night, leaving him and a companion injured.

Masum Billah, library and cafeteria secretary of Cucsu, sustained cuts above his eye, while Fisheries Department student Hasibur Rahman was also injured.

The attack occurred around 8:30pm at a fuel station near Hathazari bus stand in Chattogram.

Cucsu sources said Masum and Hasibur were refuelling their motorcycle when 7-8 unidentified assailants launched a sudden assault. The injured were first taken to the university medical centre, before Masum was shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

A duty doctor at the university medical centre said Masum was brought in with visible injuries from sharp weapons above his eye and had also sustained a serious head injury.

Cucsu leaders Jihad Hossain and Fazle Rabbi Tawhid rushed to the scene and later filed a case with Hathazari Police Station against eight people, naming local resident Ariful Islam as the prime accused.

In a social media post, Masum claimed the attack was retaliation for his role in mediating a dispute earlier this month, when a student was injured in a motorcycle accident on campus.

“Today I had to face this attack as a mediator. They tried to take revenge using blades and razors,” he wrote.

CU Proctor Prof Dr Hossain Shahid Sarwaradi confirmed that a case has been filed on the vice-chancellor’s instructions and arrangements made for Masum’s treatment.

Earlier, on March 4, Ariful Islam allegedly injured Anthropology student Moniruzzaman Raj by recklessly riding a motorcycle on campus. Masum had mediated the matter, with Ariful’s family agreeing to bear medical expenses.
