The Omicron variant may cause a major spike in Covid-19 transmission in March-April, Prof Abul Bashar Mohammad Khurshid Alam, director general of the health directorate, said today.

"We assume the transmission may rise in March-April. For this, we are working to strengthen the existing hospital capacity around the country," Prof Khurshid said while talking to journalists at his office this afternoon.

Mentioning higher demand for oxygen compared to capacity was the main issue during the last peak caused by Delta variant in June-July last year, he said installation of 40 oxygen generators in different hospitals is at final stage.

"We have also managed to set up more oxygen generators apart from these 40, from different sources," Prof Khurshid added without mentioning the quantity.
