Five Bangladeshi films have been submitted for consideration in the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards. The Bangladesh Oscar Committee will select one title to represent the country.

Runa Khan has long been recognised as one of Bangladesh’s most versatile screen performers, moving from children’s programming to the country’s most prestigious film awards.  Her latest triumph came at the Blender’s Choice–The Daily Star OTT & Digital Content Awards 2024, where she earned the Popular Best Supporting Actor (Female) award for her layered performance in Kajal Arefin Ome’s acclaimed series “Osomoy”.

“Ojana Shohore” tells the story of two strangers who unexpectedly cross paths while wandering through a city, leading to an emotional journey of connection and discovery. The 11-minute short film has been directed by Nasser Hasib Siddiqui, best known for his work in advertising but here showcasing his artistic sensibility and storytelling craft in cinema.

The film was officially selected for the prestigious Anatolia International Film Festival and the Golden Bridge Istanbul Short Film Festival, and has received honorary awards at the East Village New York Film Festival and the Athens International Art Film Festival.

Hollywood star Sydney Sweeney may soon make her Bollywood debut, with reports suggesting she has been approached for one of India’s most expensive films to date. According to The Sun, the “Euphoria” and “Anyone But You” actress has been offered a staggering £45 million (over ₹530 crore) package to headline the project.

Monihar Cinema Hall in Jashore – often described as the country’s largest single-screen theatre and once a destination for film lovers from Japan, Korea, Africa, Australia, Russia, and England – is preparing to shut its doors after 42 years. Plans are underway to demolish the historic venue to make way for an expanded market and a residential hotel, owner Ziaul Islam Mithu confirmed.

"‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ will be pre-empted indefinitely,” an ABC spokesperson said, without elaborating.

After winning awards at international film festivals in London, Chicago, Melbourne, Rome, and Mumbai, the much-discussed film “Barir Naam Shahana” is set for release in Bangladesh on September 19, director Leesa Gazi has announced. This marks Gazi’s debut as a feature filmmaker.

Season 2 of Netflix’s hit series “Wednesday” has officially entered the streamer’s list of most popular English-language TV shows of all time, racking up 94.5 million views within its first two weeks of Part 2’s release.

Pakistani hip-hop sensations Talha Anjum and Talha Yunus are coming to Dhaka for the first time to perform at a concert scheduled for the third week of October. The event is being organised by Rishka Connect and Dhaka Broadcast, the organisers confirmed to Prothom Alo.

Widely described as Sinatra’s “melancholy masterpiece,” the record was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1984 and is celebrated as one of the first true concept albums in popular music.
