CUET teachers, staff announce work abstention demanding new VC's removal
Teachers, officers and staff of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) today announced a complete work abstention and all-out non-cooperation, demanding the removal of newly appointed Vice-Chancellor Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam and reinstatement of former VC Professor Dr Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem.
CUET Teachers’ Association President Professor Mohammad Ahsan Ullah announced the decision at a press conference at the university auditorium around 3:30pm.
The decision came after the newly appointed VC entered the campus earlier in the day amid ongoing protests, accompanied by political activists, according to the associations representing the university's teachers, officers and staff.
“We strongly condemn the VC’s presence in the office with outsiders. He will be held responsible if any untoward incident occurs,” Ahsan Ullah said.
The associations also alleged that two buses carrying students towards the campus from the city came under attack. It demanded an investigation and action against those responsible.
Asked who carried out the attack, Ahsan Ullah said, “Whoever did it, it was a despicable act.”
Ahsan Ullah further said he had no information about any proposal from the VC for talks, adding, “CUET’s community does not accept him as vice-chancellor.”
He said 15 examinations had been missed and classes had remained suspended for 13 days. The association has made plans to prevent further academic delays after the situation returns to normal, he added.
Following the press conference, teachers brought out a procession on the campus.
