Nightclub photos of Bangladesh players emerge after 9-2 nightmare

Star Sports Report

Hours after Bangladesh’s 9-2 humiliation against Indonesia in the FIFA ASEAN Cup in Jakarta on Thursday, photos apparently showing national-team players Saad Uddin and Sohel Rana Jr at a nightclub surfaced on social media, raising questions about the pair’s whereabouts around the match.

The photos were posted on X, formerly Twitter, by an Indonesian user under the handle @stlobelyaisklim and were later deleted after going viral.

One caption, translated from Indonesian, said the poster had met members of the Bangladesh national team at the H Club and that they had invited her to watch the match against Indonesia.

Another post referred to the 9-2 result and said she had been approached by the players that night.

The posts, however, do not establish when the photographs were taken.

The Daily Star contacted Bangladesh team manager Amirul Islam Babu, who said the players had been instructed to return to their rooms after dinner ahead of the team’s departure for Bangladesh. The Bangladesh contingent was scheduled to leave Jakarta for home the following morning, with the squad due to arrive in the country before midday today.

“After dinner, the players have gone to sleep; we can’t stand outside their doors all night,” Babu said.

Asked about the possibility that the players had gone out, Babu added: “If they have done this, we have a disciplinary committee and we will take action from our side.”

The social-media posts emerged shortly after Bangladesh suffered their heaviest defeat in three years. Indonesia, needing a big win to overhaul Malaysia on goal difference, overwhelmed Bangladesh in the first half and led 6-1 at the break before completing a 9-2 victory.

The defeat ended Bangladesh’s ASEAN Cup campaign with three losses -- 3-0 against Malaysia, 1-0 against Singapore and 9-2 against Indonesia.
