DU hosts its first 'Pet Carnival'
Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) today organised its first “Pet Carnival” at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) to raise awareness about the welfare of campus animals.
The programme was jointly arranged by Ducsu, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, and Care DU.
Ducsu executive member Anas Ibne Monir, one of the organisers, said the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock had provided funding as well as medical services, including vaccination and treatment, for the event.
Students took part in a range of activities, including a “Pet Ramp Walk” and a creative segment titled “Dress as You Like”, where pets were presented in imaginative styles.
Three special competitions for cats were also held, including a ramp show with their owners, an eating contest, and a creative dressing competition.
Organisers said each of the university’s 18 hall unions is being provided with animal food worth around Tk 2 lakh, including 10-12 kg packets for cats and dogs, along with shelter boxes and bird nests.
Free medical services were also offered for pets, with consultations from experienced veterinarians.
Modern equipment such as ultrasonography machines was available at the venue.
Registered participants received T-shirts and snacks, while pets were given small gift items.
Speaking to The Daily Star, Anas said, “Our key motivation is to foster love, empathy and compassion towards animals, especially cats.”
Ducsu Vice President Abu Shadik Kayem said the initiative aims to give animal welfare an institutional shape and spread awareness nationwide.
“Through this programme, we want to send a message across the country about the importance of animal welfare,” he said.
