DMP suspends movements of trucks, covered vans, lorries on highways ahead of Eid

Barred from March 17 to 23; vehicles carrying essential goods exempt

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has suspended the movement of certain vehicles, including trucks, covered vans, and lorries, on highways from March 17 to March 23.

In a public notice issued on Thursday, DMP Acting Commissioner Md Sarwar said the directive aims to ensure smooth travel for people leaving Dhaka ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. Vehicles carrying essential food items, perishable goods, garment products, medicine, fertiliser and fuel will remain exempt.

The notice also requested city vehicles to avoid several key routes unless necessary during the period. These include the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway (Kuril to Abdullahpur), Dhaka–Chattogram highway (Gulistan to Signboard), Dhaka–Aricha highway and Mirpur Road (Aarong Crossing to Aminbazar), Dhaka–Keraniganj road (Fulbaria–Tatibazar–Babubazar Bridge), Dhaka–Mawa highway (Gulistan to Buriganga Bridge), Mohammadpur Bosila Crossing to Bosila Bridge, Abdullahpur to Dhaur Bridge, and Fulbaria to Sadarghat launch terminal.

Transport owners and workers have been instructed to operate buses from terminals, avoid charging extra fares, drive responsibly, and ensure valid licences and vehicle fitness.

Passengers and pedestrians were advised to use designated terminals, safeguard belongings, avoid food from strangers, and cross roads using footbridges or zebra crossings.

In case of emergencies, travellers may contact police control rooms at terminals or call the national emergency service number 999, said DMP acting commissioner.
