Death in army custody: BNP leader Dablu buried in Chuadanga
BNP leader Shamsuzzaman Dablu, who died while in army custody in Jibannagar, was laid to rest at the Jibannagar Municipal Central Eidgah graveyard in Chuadanga around 10:00 am today.
After the funeral prayers, Dablu’s elder brother Shariful Islam Kajol said, “Everyone has given assurances of a fair trial. We do not believe in assurances alone. We want the trial of those involved. No one should be spared.”
Despite the demand, no case has been filed with police on the third day after the incident.
Solayman Sheikh, officer-in-charge of Jibannagar Police Station, said at 6:00 pm that no family member had come forward with a complaint.
Kajol told The Daily Star that the matter of filing a case was being handled by their brother-in-law, lawyer Badiuzzaman, along with party leaders.
“I cannot handle this alone,” he said.
Contacted, Badiuzzaman added, “Without party support, it is not possible. Perhaps we will be able to reach some decision by Sunday.”
Dablu, general secretary of the Jibannagar municipal unit BNP, died in army custody in the early hours of Tuesday.
Family members, local residents, and party leaders alleged he was tortured to death after being picked up by army personnel.
However, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), in a press release, stated that Dablu died after falling ill during a joint forces operation.
