Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman today sought the United Kingdom’s support for Bangladesh’s candidature for the upcoming presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for the 2026‑2027 term.

During a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke assured that the UK would give “due consideration” to Bangladesh’s candidature and committed to relay the country’s competency to London.

The two sides discussed expanding collaboration in areas including education, migration, security cooperation, Rohingya repatriation, and strengthening people‑to‑people ties.

The foreign minister urged the UK to continue its leadership role in the UN Security Council and other international fora to ensure the speedy return of Rohingyas to Myanmar.

They discussed how UK’s Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS) can help Bangladesh diversify exports and create new opportunities.

Dr Khalilur also appreciated the UK for sending Minister for the Indo‑Pacific, Seema Malhotra, to attend the oath‑taking ceremony of the new government.

Speaking to reporters, High Commissioner Cooke said, "UK has very long standing partnership with Bangladesh and we are very much looking forward to continuing to work closely together in this new chapter for the country,”

Earlier in the day, the high commissioner also met State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed.
