Deadly seven days

75pc of all Covid deaths since Jan 3 occurred in past week alone

Covid fatalities have risen alarmingly over the past week, which saw more than 75 percent of the total deaths from coronavirus in the country since January 3.

Covid cases have also gone up significantly in those seven days.

Over 2.5 lakh cases were reported in the last one month and 2.11 lakh of them were detected between January 28 and February 3, shows DGHS data.

The Directorate General of Health Services reported 434 coronavirus deaths since January 3. It said 340 Covid patients died in the past seven days alone.

Thirty people died in 24 hours till yesterday morning.

Though the death rate increased, the number of daily cases dropped below the 10,000-mark after 12 days, the data shows.

Fresh 9,052 cases were reported yesterday.

The positivity rate decreased to 22.95 percent after 39,445 samples were tested in 24 hours from Thursday 8:00am, the DGHS said in a press release.

The daily cases had crossed the 10,000-mark on January 23 and remained above that till Thursday.

The positivity rate remained above 25pc for 16 days at a stretch. On Thursday, it was 25.86 percent.

Covid cases began to rise after December 10 following the detection of the Omicron variant in the country. A month after that, the government issued a fresh 11-point restrictions to curb the surge.

Another 6,282 patients have recovered from Covid-19, taking the total number of recoveries to 15,87,374 and the recovery rate  to 86.04 percent.

Of the 30 deceased, 19 were men and 11 women.

Of them, two were between 21 and 30, two 41 and 50, four 51 and 60, eight 61 and 70, ten 71 and 80, and four within 81-90, said the release.

The DGHS said among the total 28,524 Covid deaths, 12,499 occurred in Dhaka division, 5,768 in Chattogram, 2,094 in Rajshahi, 3,652 in Khulna, 963 in Barishal, 1,296 in Sylhet, 1,385 in Rangpur and 866 in Mymensingh divisions.
