‘ANNiE’ explores trauma and revenge in chilling trailer

Set against the backdrop of a world gripped by another pandemic, fear and uncertainty, the trailer for “ANNiE”, the upcoming short series from acclaimed filmmaker Abdullah Mohammad Saad, offers a haunting glimpse into a society slowly unravelling.

Employing the filmmaker’s signature blue-toned visual palette—reminiscent of his celebrated film “Rehana Maryam Noor”—the trailer evokes a pervasive sense of pain, isolation and unease.

ANNiE has already earned considerable attention as this project is Bangladesh’s first series to be selected for the prestigious international television festival, the Series Camp Festival “Women in Series” section.

Nazifa Tushi in and as Annie

Now, the makers have unveiled the official trailer and poster for the miniseries yesterday, offering audiences their first glimpse into the dystopian, unsettling and mystery-filled world of Annie, portrayed by Nazifa Tushi.

The series is set to have its world premiere on Tuesday, June 9, at Theatre 3 of the Cinenova venue in Cologne, Germany. Ahead of the premiere, the trailer has been released to audiences worldwide.

Nazifa Tushi stars in the titular role as Annie, a young nurse struggling to survive while caring for her five siblings. However, her life takes a dramatic turn following a devastating attack. As she grapples with the hatred that has accumulated both within herself and in the world around her, Annie finds herself descending into a darkness from which revenge appears to be the only way forward.

According to a press release issued by the production team, “ANNiE” has been crafted in the style of a chamber drama. Much like filmmaker Abdullah Mohammad Saad’s previous works, the series explores themes of inequality, mistrust and social violence embedded within relationships between men and women. By intertwining personal trauma with wider societal crises, the creators believe the series will resonate strongly with international audiences.

Alongside Nazifa Tushi, the cast features Yash Rohan, Symon Sadik, Sarika Subrin, Farhana Mithu, Nazah and several others. Although members of the cast and crew had planned to attend the world premiere, the producers revealed that visa complications prevented them from travelling despite completing all necessary preparations.

Describing the series, the festival organisers stated: “This series from Bangladesh transforms a ‘what if’ scenario into a gripping dramatic thriller.”
