Bollywood's 'Laapataa Ladies' writer joins Taneem Rahman Angshu's 'Limbo'
After a long break from making feature films, National Film Award-winning filmmaker Taneem Rahman Angshu is returning to the big screen with “Limbo”, and he has now brought on board Biplab Goswami, the writer of Bollywood film “Laapataa Ladies”, as the screenplay writer.
Angshu announced the project in June, describing “Limbo” as a cosmic romance and space drama. Following the release of its first-look poster, the film has already drawn attention for its unusual premise.
Confirming Goswami's involvement on social media on Wednesday, Angshu said that a strong story remains the foundation of any film, regardless of whether it is made for an OTT platform, television or as a music video.
Referring to his previous film “No Dorai”, Angshu recalled working with writer Shyamal Sengupta on the story and said that he has now entrusted the screenplay of his new project to Goswami.
“Now, to make the canvas even bigger, I have the writer of the acclaimed film ‘Laapataa Ladies’, Biplab Goswami, with me,” Angshu wrote.
According to Angshu, “Limbo” will combine space drama with cosmic romance, a setting he believes has not previously been explored in Bangladeshi cinema. The filmmaker also plans to place considerable emphasis on the film's visual effects, aiming to offer audiences a different experience.
The project is being planned on a large scale, with shooting scheduled to take place in three countries. Angshu also intends to screen the film at international film festivals before its commercial release in Bangladesh.
Explaining his return to feature filmmaking, Angshu said that several projects had been under consideration over the past six or seven years, but he was looking for a story that would present a significant challenge and introduce a genre or treatment not previously attempted in Bangladesh.
“I think ‘Limbo’ is a very challenging project. Although making it in Bangladesh may seem impossible, as a filmmaker, I have chosen this challenge,” he said.
Angshu had previously offered a glimpse into the film's atmosphere through its first-look poster, writing, “No matter how many light years the distance, the pull of familiar feelings never ends. At the boundary between emptiness and fullness, stories of losing and finding come together.”
Alongside directing, Angshu is involved in developing the film's story and production, while Goswami has joined as its screenplay writer.
The filmmaker plans to complete the shooting and post-production of “Limbo” and release the film in theatres in 2027.
