‘When Real Madrid came calling, it was impossible to say no’

Bernardo Silva has revealed that joining Real Madrid was a decision he made without hesitation, describing the opportunity to wear the famous white shirt as "impossible to say no" after completing his first training session at the club's Valdebebas training complex.

The Portuguese playmaker, who officially began life as a Real Madrid player on Tuesday, said the club's unmatched history and winning culture left him with no doubts when the offer arrived.

"It is very special, and I am very happy to be here," Silva told Realmadrid TV after his first workout. "Talking about this club is unnecessary because its history speaks for itself. I am here to help this team keep winning because that is what Real Madrid knows how to do — win, win and win."

Silva admitted his first session under new coach Jose Mourinho was physically demanding but insisted he already feels at home in Madrid.

"The first training session was tough, but I am very happy to meet everyone and my new teammates. I already knew some of them from playing against them over the years, but now being on the same side is a great feeling. Everyone is working with great intensity, and honestly, this place already feels like home."

The 31-year-old also expressed his excitement about working under Mourinho, one of Portugal's most decorated managers.

"We have been rivals before, and now we are together. Mourinho has meant so much to Portuguese football. Growing up, we watched his teams, and he always put Portugal on the world stage. I am looking forward to learning from him."

Known for his versatility and relentless work rate, Silva promised to put the team's success above personal ambitions.

"I am a team player and a hard worker. I always try to make the players around me better. I can play in different positions, and I will always be ready to do whatever Real Madrid needs."

But it was Silva's explanation of why he chose Madrid that summed up the magnitude of the move.

"Having played against Real Madrid many times, you understand how enormous this club is. Playing at the Santiago Bernabeu is a unique experience because of its atmosphere and history."

Silva added that the chance to be closer to his family in Portugal made the transfer even more appealing, but stressed that the biggest attraction was fulfilling a lifelong football dream.

"Being close to my family and in a culture similar to Portugal certainly helps. But playing for the greatest club in football history, as its trophies prove, is a privilege. I am very happy."

The Portuguese international also named Zinedine Zidane among his greatest football inspirations, alongside Benfica legend Rui Costa and Luka Modric, whom he described as a role model both on and off the pitch.

"Zidane is undoubtedly one of my biggest references. When I was young, I admired the way he controlled the ball and played the game. He is one of the five greatest players in football history. Modrić has also been a huge inspiration, and every conversation I have had with him has shown what a great person he is."
