BCB investigates Nahid Rana’s back pain
Doubts are growing over Bangladesh pacer Nahid Rana’s participation in the upcoming West Indies Test series, although the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is yet to rule him out.
The board has launched an investigation into the back pain he experienced during his recovery and is assessing the situation.
Rana, who missed the Australia Tests, the subsequent Asian Games and the ongoing Test against Afghanistan due to a side strain, complained of back pain a few days ago. BCB officials familiar with the matter have said the issue is not a serious concern. Rana visited Evercare Hospital for investigations into the pain.
“We are doing an investigation and as part of that he went to the hospital today. But till now no serious concern had been found,” a BCB official told The Daily Star.
Rana had suffered a shin sprain before sustaining a side strain in Zimbabwe in July. The pacer had begun bowling with greater intensity in recent weeks to build up his workload ahead of a return to action before experiencing back pain in recent days. The BCB is discussing whether to seek a second opinion from a specialist regarding the latest complaint.
Rana has been asked to stop bowling for the time being. Scans have been conducted and the reports are being assessed, but BCB sources have said the pacer has not been ruled out of the upcoming West Indies Tests.
Chief selector Habibul Bashar’s comments on Sunday, however, suggested that his participation in the two-match Test series, starting on October 28, remains uncertain.
“He is not completely ruled out of Windies series. We are going step by step and plan was for him to play the tri-nation series but he will not be able to play there,” Bashar told reporters.
“He is undergoing scans and if needed may be sent abroad. We are trying to get him back soon but at this moment a time frame can’t be given,” he added.
