The body of a 10‑year‑old boy was recovered on Tuesday night from the Chaktai canal in Chattogram city.

The victim was identified as Md Rakib, son of Main Uddin, a rickshaw puller living in the Bhera Market slum under Bakolia area.

Rakib had gone to bathe in the canal with friends around 2pm. While the others returned, he did not. His family later informed the Fire Service, prompting a rescue operation.

Md Jasim Uddin, deputy director of Fire Service and Civil Defence in Chattogram, said firefighters recovered the body around 9:30pm near a sluice gate.

Family members and officials confirmed Rakib had been missing for hours before the search began.

Authorities noted that at least 14 people have died after falling into canals and drains across Chattogram in the past six years.
