Man killed as train hits him in Jashore

A former schoolteacher was killed after being hit by a train in Jashore yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Karunakanta Mondal, 80, of Monirampur upazila. He was a retired teacher of Panchbaria Government Primary School.

The incident occurred around 10:00am in the Sardar Mill area along the Jashore-Khulna railway line. Karunakanta was walking along the side of the railway track when the Jashore-bound Rupsha Express struck him, leaving him critically injured.

Locals rescued and took him to Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex, where he later died while undergoing treatment.

The victim’s son, Gaur Kanta Mondal, said his father had been missing. He identified the body at the hospital after being informed of the incident.

Dr Nasif Sayeed, an emergency department physician at the health complex, said the elderly man had suffered severe head injuries.

Nawabpur Railway Station Master Yaser Arafat confirmed the incident. Railway police recovered the body, and an investigation is underway.
