Remonstration

Nuzhat Mannan

art work by sabyasachi hazra

I cannot feast upon your eyes nor swoon upon your breast
I cannot pant nor for that matter pine
I am not the species that age does not miraculously wither
I cannot rejuvenate what has gone beyond its prime.
I am not a crotchety old wretch
nor you the beauty that you once were
I cannot make promises I cannot keep
What is wrong with the staccato we have grown
accustomed to?
And why should we not be the two
that we always were: sane and separate? I love you still, in ways that are befitting
a man and a woman who have slept with
and slipped away from one another. Nuzhat Mannan teaches English at Dhaka University.
