Makers of fake foreign liquors jailed

They had been hoodwinking customers with spurious items in the name of Haig, Whyte & Mackay, Smirnoff, Alba Lupa and several other foreign branded liquors and whiskeys. Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) yesterday seized 14 bottles of the spurious items from a clandestine factory at an abandoned house at Chhoto Shalgaria village in Pabna municipality and arrested three people from there, and produced them before a mobile court. The court awarded one and a half years rigorous imprisonment and Tk 30 fine of thousand to each of the offenders. The arrestees, Md Joney, Rony Hossain and Md Azmal Hossain, all of Shalgaria village, manufactured the items with spirit, water, coloured drinks and different chemicals, put it into bottles of different brands, and sold in black market for cheap prices. “We caught the culprits, red-handed when they were filling popular brand bottles with spurious wine. We also seized 14 bottles of spurious item, a jar of spirit, coloured cold drinks and mineral water from the spot,” SM Nadim Arefin, commanding officer of Pabna camp of Rab-12, said. “The arrestees, who illegally kept rectified spirit in their possession and manufactured the spurious items by using banned chemicals, confessed to their crimes. They have been awarded one and a half years rigorous imprisonment and fine of Tk 30 thousand each under the Anti-drug Act 1990," said Executive Magistrate Md Shamsuzzaman of the mobile court. Earlier Md Jony told the Rab operation team that they had been doing the business for the last few months as there is huge demand for the branded liquors and whiskeys.
