38 candidates punished for violating code of conduct

Mobile courts at Patgram and Hatibandha upazilas of Lalmonirhat fined 36 candidates in the upcoming elections to the union parishads (UP) on Saturday night for violating election code of conduct and realised Tk 45 thousand from them. Of them, 12 are in race for chairman posts, eight for women's reserved seats and rest 16 for member posts of 10 unions under the two upazilas. Thirty-five candidates were fined in nine union parishads under Hatibandha upazila and the rest one at Kuchlibari UP under Patgram upazila, reports our correspondent. A mobile court led by Patgram upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Harunur Rashid, also the executive magistrate and another led by Hatibandha UNO Ashrafuzzaman, also the executive magistrate, punished the candidates for pasting posters on walls and hanging colour banners in public places, violating the election rules. Police said, a chairman candidate of Kuchlibari UP under Patgram upazila was fined Tk 10,000 and rest 35 candidates in nine union parishads under Hatibandha upazila were fined Tk 1,000 each. In Gaibandha, a mobile court fined a candidate and seized motorbike and banners of two others for breaching code of conduct for UP election in Sundarganj upazila yesterday, reports our correspondent. The court led by magistrate Shamsul Azam, UNO Sundarganj upazila, observed that chairman candidate Ali Haider of Chapporhati union continued using loud speakers to seek vote and fined him Tk 2,000 for breaching code of conduct. The court also seized a motorbike without registration number used by chairman candidate Mottaleb Mia of Santiram union and seized banners hung by Shamiul Islam, another chairman candidate of same union. In Kishoreganj, a mobile court on Saturday fined a union parishad chairman candidate for violating electoral code of conduct, reports UNB. Police said Abu Taher, chairman candidate of Gurui union parishad in Nikli upazila, staged showdown with a motorcade in the area violating rules. Later, the mobile court led by upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Fazlur Rahman fined Abu Taher Tk 2,000, in default, to suffer seven days RI. In Jhenidah, a BNP candidate in Sailkupa upazila has decided to boycott the upcoming union parishad elections scheduled for June 28. Frequent threat and intimidation by the ruling party men over cell phones have compelled me to withdraw from race, said candidate Nazrul Islam Joarder, former UP chairman of Hakimpur union parishad. He is the BNP Sailkupa thana unit joint secretary, reports our correspondent. Joarder said, he was the most popular chairman candidate in his locality. But the ruling party men were threatening him of dire consequences if he did not quit from election race. Former lawmaker and BNP Sailkupa thana committee president Abdul Wahab, condemning the threat allegedly by ruling party men said, it was a threat to holding a free and fair election and it goes against the spirit of democracy. Blaming the AL Sailkupa thana committee secretary Mosarraf Hossain Sona Sikder, he alleged that his men were doing this in favour of his son Qamruzzaman Jiku contesting against the BNP leader. Mosharraf Hossain, refuting the allegation said, the BNP men are fabricating story as their candidate is destined to be defeated in the election.
