Polls to 322 Sylhet div UPs begin tomorrow

Elections to 322 union parishads (UPs) out of 332 in Sylhet division will begin tomorrow. However, election in the rest 10 will not be held now due to complexities of problems involving some new ones, officials said. Elections in 8 unions of Sylhet Sadar upazila will take place on 31 May, while it would conclude through polls in Chunarughat upazila of Habiganj district on 5 July, they said. The whole Sylhet division wore a festive look with the nearing of the election. The candidates, their family members, well-wishers and workers were engaged in last-minute election campaign. Forty-nine are contesting for chairmanship in eight unions of Sylhet Sadar upazila. Elections to 94 union parishads in Sylhet district will be held from 31 May to 2 July. However, the authorities could not announce the date for election to the five union parishads of Fenchuganj upazila. It is because of the two newly formed unions in the upazila where voter list is yet to be rearranged. Besides, election to some other unions had already been stayed by the court orders. Voting will be held in eight unions of Sadar upazila on 31 May, followed by eight unions of Gowainghat on 2 June and six unions of Companiganj on 5 June. In Jaintapur, elections of six unions will take place on 8 June and in Kanaighat it will be on 11 June. On 14 June, polls will be held in nine unions of Zakiganj upazila and on 21 June in 10 unions of Beanibazar upazila. In Golapganj upazila, it will be held in 11 unions on 18 June followed by 14 unions of Balaganj upazila on 25 June and eight unions of Biswanath upazila on 28 June while in nine unions of Dakshin Surma upazila it will be held on 2 July, official sources informed. Besides, election to 77 union parishads of Habiganj district will be held from 6 June to 5 July this year. In January-Ferbruary, 2003, elections to 332 union parishads in Sylhet division was held. That year it was held in 101 unions in Sylhet, 87 in Sunamganj, 67 in Moulvibazar and 77 in Habiganj district.
