‘I have no clue about this’: Anurag Kashyap on Epstein files mention
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has firmly denied any connection to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein after his name surfaced in unverified documents circulating online, commonly referred to as the “Epstein files”.
The controversy follows the recent release of investigation-related documents by the US Department of Justice, which have reignited global scrutiny of Epstein’s network. As excerpts and screenshots from these documents spread across social media, several prominent names—many without substantiated evidence—have been drawn into speculation.
Kashyap’s name appeared in a widely shared screenshot of an alleged email describing a “Bollywood guy” and a “famous Bollywood director” who was supposedly linked to an Epstein-associated event scheduled to take place in Beijing in 2017. The material, shared across platforms including Reddit and X, remains unverified.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Kashyap dismissed the claims outright.
“I’ve no clue about this. I get about 15 invitations a month as a speaker, and I rarely respond,” he said. “I have never been to Beijing in my life.”
Questioning the credibility of the circulating material, Kashyap added, “It’s some random email—that’s self-explanatory. Clickbaits in my name are more popular than my films.”
Social media reactions ranged from scepticism to satire. One Reddit user commented, “Is this Epstein’s files or Chitragupt’s accounting book? Everyone’s in there.” Another wrote that attention should remain focused on those proven to have participated in Epstein’s crimes, rather than individuals whose names appear in alleged invitations.
Earlier, filmmaker Mira Nair’s name had also surfaced in online discussions linked to the same document dump, though no verified evidence has emerged tying her to Epstein’s activities.
On the work front, Kashyap most recently directed the two-part crime drama “Nishaanchi”. He is currently preparing for the Indian release of his film “Kennedy”, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023 and has since screened at several international festivals.
