Work to free Louhajang River from grabbers kicks off
Work to free the Louhajang River, which has turned into a narrow canal due to encroachment on its bank and shoreline by grabbers, was inaugurated by Mohammad Sanwar Hossain, lawmaker of Tangail-5, yesterday.
Mahbub Hossain, deputy commissioner (DC) of Tangail, senior government officials in the district, and local public representatives were present on the occasion.
On the first day, water hyacinth was cleared from Beradoma Bridge to Dighulia area in the town. Before that, the sluice gate in Jugni area was opened to allow the water to flow, said Mohammad Sanwarul Haque, assistant commissioner (Land) of Tangail Sadar upazila.
"Now we are working to ensure normal water flow of the river. Work to recover the shorelines will be started during the dry season," he added.
Originating from the Dhaleshwari River, a tributary of the Jamuna River, the Louhajang River flows through Tangail town and falls into the Banshai River.
