Schools, colleges to protest violence on women Oct 18

All schools and colleges across the country will form human chains on October 18 protesting the recent spate of violence against women.

The Ministry of Education will arrange the programme, which will be held at the institutions' respective premises for 15 minutes starting 11:00am.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid announced the programme at a press briefing on ensuring the protection of female students and combating violence against them.

The minister urged for social awareness in all rings of society and pressed the need for movement against the violence on women.

Keeping with this initiative, the minister also called for a meeting among students and local elderly people and imams of mosques at all schools and colleges on October 20.

After the meeting, a committee will be formed which will help in ensuring protection of female students, give warning to suspicious males and help hand them over to law enforcers if required, the minister said.

"The ones who are carrying out these activities are enemies of the society, are miscreants and distorted humans. They are beasts in the names of human beings," Nurul Islam Nahid said.

"We demand that these murderers are brought to book and be punished. This will give hope to people and also set an example that no one will get away with crimes such as this," he added.
