'Save school from river erosion'
Local people demanded immediate steps to save a school from erosion by the River Jhinai in the district.
They blocked Tangail-Basail road in this regard yesterday, causing immense sufferings to hundreds of passengers.
With the floodwater receding, erosion by the river, a tributary of Jamuna, took a serious turn in the morning, devouring a part of Nothkhola Government Primary School and its Shaheed Minar.
The agitating people then blocked the road for about two hours, disrupting vehicular movements.
Later, the agitators withdrew the blockade following an assurance by the executive engineer of Water Development Board (WDB) in Tangail of taking immediate steps to check the erosion.
Mentionable, erosion by the Jhinai River made over 250 families homeless at 12 villages in Basail upazila in the last one month.
