Jamuna erosion hits three Gaibandha villages
Erosion by the river Jamuna has taken a serious turn in a week, rendering a number of families homeless at three villages in Saghata upazila of the district.
The affected villages are Kamaipara, Bera and Haldia.
Locals said, at least 130 homesteads in those villages already went into the river bed due to the erosion while many other structures and vast areas of croplands are in the verge of collapse.
Meanwhile, locals, guardians, teachers and students of Kanaipara Dakhil Madrasa formed a human chain on the bank of the river on Friday demanding immediate steps to stop the erosion and save the institution.
Haldia UP chairman Yakub Ali said although the Water Development Board (WDB) had implemented a bank protection work last year but the situation remained unchanged at many points.
WDB Executive Engineer Prakash Kumar said a master plan is required for a permanent solution to stop the erosion.
