Star Online Report

Police have submitted probe report on the attacks on Hindu community at Brahmanbaria's Nasirnagar recommending punitive actions against two police officials for their negligence in duties.

Mohammad Sakhawat Hossain, chief of the four-member probe body, submitted the report to the police headquarters in Dhaka around 5:00pm today, he told The Daily Star over phone.

"Punitive actions have been recommended against two inspector-level officials in the report," he said.

The fact finding body also found that an intra-party feud among local politicians provoked a "third party" to go for the attacks on the Hindu community.

In the report, some 15-20 persons have been identified as "instigators and attackers" on the religious minority, he said.

"We cannot reveal their names and further details for the sake of a fair investigation," Hossain, also the additional deputy inspector general of police (Chittagong Range), added.

The body also made 30 recommendations to avert such incidents in future.

The committee was formed on November 1 to find out how the attacks were made the day before and the role of the administration and was asked to give recommendations as to how such incidents can be prevented in future.

On October 30, religious zealots, armed with sticks and sharp weapons, went berserk for around two hours rampaging in Duttabari, Goura Mandir, Jagannath Mandir and Kashipara Mandir in Brahmanbaria's Nasirnagar and ransacked over 100 Hindu houses and looted them over a Facebook post that allegedly hurt Muslim sentiment.

At least 58 families were affected and 17 temples were either damaged or looted in at least eight Hindu-dominated areas that day.
