DU freshers hold signature campaign over hall seat crisis
Freshers of Dhaka University’s 2025-26 academic session held a signature campaign throughout the day demanding immediate allocation of residential hall seats, as the long-standing accommodation crisis deepened for new students.
The programme began at 8:00am this morning in front of Madhur Canteen and continued until 6:00pm.
Students said their studies are being disrupted as many have not been allotted seats even after classes have begun, forcing them to stay in messes, sublets or with relatives.
“Those of us who came to campus but did not get hall seats shared posts in our groups, and others joined and signed,” said Ashab Ahmed Shahib, a student of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall.
“We will compile the signatures and submit a memorandum to the vice-chancellor.”
Nakibul Islam of Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall said, “This is hampering our classes. We are also facing daily hardships, including increased travel time and food-related difficulties while staying outside.”
Around 30 students later surrounded the university’s administrative building at noon and met the vice-chancellor and registrar.
Ducsu Cultural Affairs Secretary Musaddiq Ali Ibne Mohammad said the administration had assured them of an update by April 30.
“If there is any deviation, we will go for stricter programmes,” he said.
Separately, the Samajtantrik Chhatra Front DU unit demanded immediate accommodation and proposed housing allowances as a temporary solution.
