Seminar at Shanto-Mariam University highlights fintech and AI in banking transformation

A seminar at Shanto-Mariam University on Monday highlighted the growing role of financial technology (fintech) and artificial intelligence (AI) in transforming Bangladesh’s banking industry, with speakers stressing the need for technological adaptation and skilled human resources.

Titled “Reshaping the Banking Sector in Bangladesh: The Role of Fin Tech and AI”, the event was jointly organised by the university’s Departments of Business Administration and Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). Held at the university auditorium, the seminar brought together academics, banking professionals and students to discuss the sector’s evolving landscape.

Keynote speaker Mohammad Ali, managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) of Pubali Bank Ltd., said the global banking industry is rapidly becoming technology-driven. He noted that fintech and AI are making financial services faster, more secure and more efficient, while also improving customer experience.

He underscored the urgency of developing a technologically skilled workforce to keep pace with these changes. Addressing students, he said acquiring knowledge and expertise in fintech and AI would be essential to remain competitive in an increasingly digital global environment.

Speakers at the seminar also pointed to the potential of digital currency and technology-based financial solutions to modernise banking operations in Bangladesh. They emphasised that innovation and research, combined with human resource development, would play a critical role in ensuring a more transparent and customer-oriented banking system.

The seminar was attended by Prof. Mostafizul Haque, chairman of the Board of Trustees; Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr Md Shah-e-Alam; Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology Prof. Dr Mobarak Hossain; Registrar Dr Par Mashiour Rahman; and Prof. Dr Behzad Nur, head of the Department of Business Administration.

Also present were associate Prof. Faisal Imran, head of the CSE Department; Abu Lais Md Shamsuzzaman, general manager and Dhaka Central Region head of Pubali Bank; deputy general manager Kamruzzaman Khan; and assistant general manager and head of the bank’s Shantinagar Branch, Uzzal Kumar Saha.

Faculty members, officials and a large number of students attended the event.

Participants concluded that technology-driven innovation and the development of skilled professionals would be key to building a modern, efficient and customer-friendly banking sector in Bangladesh.
