Chattogram deputy commissioner, superintendent of police, and Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) proctor went to the vice-chancellor’s office this evening and rescued him after nearly 30 hours.

Demonstrating students locked CUET VC Sheikh Shariful Islam inside the administrative building around 12:30pm yesterday, demanding his resignation.

The Daily Star correspondent who is present at the site confirmed the development.

When he was being escorted away, students were heard shouting, "Bhua! Bhua!"

Around 1:00pm today, a group of students unlocked the main gate of the vice-chancellor's office to allow journalists to enter. About 15 students were seen stationed in front of the office with a microphone.

Speaking to journalists at that time, the newly appointed VC said he had been experiencing chest pain and a headache and required medical assistance.

The confrontation flared up around 9:00am yesterday when the VC arrived on campus for the first time since his September 21 appointment in a microbus. According to university sources, he entered through the main gate after identifying himself as a “teacher.”

Accompanied by some faculty members, officials, and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders, Professor Alam proceeded to the VC office and broke open padlocks previously placed on the doors by protesting students, said sources at CUET.

As the news spread, hundreds of students gathered in front of the building, chanting slogans such as “We reject the new VC” and demanding his immediate resignation. They gave him an ultimatum to leave campus by noon. When the deadline passed, students declared the building “vacant,” re-locked the outer gates, and cut off utility lines.
