WEF recognises Denim Expert of Bangladesh for sustainability, inclusivity

Denim Expert, a Chattogram based denim factory, has been recognised as 'New Champion' by the World Economic Forum (WEF) for its extraordinary performance in sustainability and inclusivity.

Denim Expert Limited was recognised as an "Honorable Mention" in the Excellence in Sustainability category in the New Champion Award.

In a statement, the WEF said Denim Expert is a niche denim manufacturing plant in Bangladesh that is actively working to promote sustainability and inclusivity in the apparel industry in the country.

"In 2019, the firm set sustainable goals and targets across several areas, including reducing consumption of energy and water, CO2 emissions, and waste generation. In association with USAID, the firm is also working to provide opportunities to transgender people and human trafficking survivors," the WEF said.

The World Economic Forum's New Champion companies explore business models, technologies and sustainable growth strategies that will be needed in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the organisation also said.

The New Champions awards recognise excellence in sustainability, digital disruption and agile business governance.

From their impact on the planet and society to how they can participate in building a better future, the World Economic Forum's New Champion companies are doing just that – exploring new business models, emerging technologies and sustainable growth strategies that will be vital in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The Forum's New Champions awards have recognised three organisations with the potential to create real long-term change through the areas of sustainability, digital disruption and agile governance.

Winning projects must have the potential to deliver a substantial impact on business and society, be financially viable and ready to operate at scale – or already doing so, the statement of the WEF said.

"The award has been given as recognition in champion of sustainability. We are proud of our green factories in Bangladesh. We have a lot of achievements in sustainability globally. Such an award will definitely help build a positive image of Bangladesh, particularly about the image of the Bangladeshi garment sector," said Mostafiz Uddin, managing director of Denim Expert over phone to The Daily Star today.
