‘It’s something beautiful’: Cuti Romero’s emotional night as Argentina captain

Cristian “Cuti” Romero marked his first game as Argentina’s primary captain with a goal in a 4-0 win over Bolivia at the Mario Alberto Kempes Stadium today.

The Cordoba-born defender led his country on home soil for the first time since being named Lionel Messi’s successor in the captaincy and Romero could hardly have scripted a more emotional homecoming.

Ten years after making his professional debut for Belgrano at the same stadium, the centre-back returned as captain of the three-time world champions and capped the occasion with a goal in front of his family.

“It was a special day,” Romero said after the final whistle.

“Ten years ago, I made my debut here with Belgrano, and to return today as captain, having lived through the greatest era of our national team, is something beautiful.

“I never would have imagined this. It’s a huge responsibility, but I feel ready.”

Romero’s night was about much more than just the result.

With Messi and Nicolas Otamendi no longer part of the leadership picture, Lionel Scaloni has placed his trust in Romero as Argentina enters a new chapter.

Emiliano Martinez and Lautaro Martinez are next in the leadership group, but in Córdoba, it was Romero who carried the responsibility.

And he made sure the occasion was one to remember.

Uncle’s bizarre prediction comes true

Before kick-off, Romero’s family were already expecting something special.

His uncle made a bold prediction that the defender would score a header.

“He’ll score a header today. We’ll win 2-1,” he predicted.

The final score was nowhere near his forecast – Argentina thrashed Bolivia 4-0.

But one part of his prediction was spot on. Romero rose above the defence to power a header into the net and make it 3-0, sending the home crowd into celebration.

For his family watching from the stands, it was another unforgettable moment in a remarkable journey.

His mother, Rosa, had spoken before the match about the pride she felt watching her son take on such a major responsibility. “Very proud and very blessed,” she said.

“All the best, as always, for him and all Argentinians in this new stage that the National Team is beginning. I’m very happy. His perseverance, his sacrifice, all the ability he has always had, the mental strength that has led him to be where he is today.”

Romero’s grandmother was equally emotional when reflecting on his rapid rise.

“I’m always happy for Cuti. I always wish him the best, always,” she said. What he’s accomplished in such a short time is beautiful. The whole family is very proud.”

‘We’re going to miss Leo’

But amid the celebrations, Romero also took a moment to acknowledge the man whose armband he has now inherited.

Messi’s absence marks the beginning of a different era for Argentina, but Romero insists the team must continue moving forward.

“This continues,” he said.

“We’re going to miss Leo, our captain. There won’t be another like him, but he left us a great legacy, and we have to keep going to take Argentina back to the top.”

Romero has already worn the captain’s armband three times before the Bolivia clash.

He led Argentina against Chile in the 2025 South American World Cup Qualifiers, against Venezuela in a friendly in October that year, and against Mauritania in a 2-1 victory before the 2026 World Cup.

But this was different.
