Litton's landmark dismissal dents Afghan resistance

Star Sports Report

Litton Das became the first player in Test cricket to record nine dismissals while scoring a century and a fifty in the same match on Tuesday.

He broke the previous record of South Africa’s Denis Lindsay, who had eight dismissals to go with a century and a half-century in the same Test in 1966.

Litton reached the milestone with another blinder of a catch as Bangladesh finally managed to take a wicket after a frustrating first session on the final day of the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

The veteran wicketkeeper-batter, who turned 32 today, has enjoyed a tremendous match both behind and in front of the stumps, taking some glorious catches and making superb stumpings while scoring a century and a half-century. He added another moment of brilliance to his tally with a diving, one-handed catch to dismiss Ikram Alikhil (33) off Ebadot Hossain just before lunch.

That was the only dismissal of the morning session as Afghanistan, having resumed the day at 132 for three, reached 203 for four at lunch.

Sediqullah Atal was unbeaten on 66 as Bangladesh’s pacers and spinners alike struggled to find much assistance from the pitch.

Hashmatullah Shahidi, the other overnight batter, added just one run to his overnight score of 19 before retiring hurt after a throw struck the inside of his knee.

Ismat Alam had just joined Atal at the crease as Bangladesh finally exposed Afghanistan’s tail, with the hosts still 276 runs short of their victory target.
