A Chat With Prottay Khan
So, Prottay! Let's talk about the songs that made you known in the industry.
The works that gained popularity among my fans are "Tumi Chaile", "Bhalobasha Ki", "Ekla Ami" and "Bhalobasha Emone." These are all singles that I performed in various compilation albums, since I have not published any solo albums yet.
But haven't you composed the tune of a mixed album?
Yeah I have, for an album named "FNF," which was published back in 2011. It was by all the big names of the industry back then, and I put a lot of attention and care in crafting the details and developing the finesse of the songs. It was quite popular among the fans as well.
Who are your inspirations?
My father is a prime inspiration behind my musical passion. Members of my family, including my brother Hridoy Khan, who is a famed musician and music director, are always there to support me in my pursuit. Everyone in my family has a lot of expectations from me, as far as music is concerned and that serves as my primary inspiration.
How did you enter the world of music?
I did not really learn about music like that from anyone. As music was an ever present guest at my home, it has been more of a "learning by observing" experience for me. I first taught myself to play the guitar, and now I can play most major instruments, but I never really had any Ustads to show me the way.
Who are some of your favourite artists?
I like instrumental pieces more than songs. I'm a fan of Bryan Tenlor, whose playing I find amazing. I like the music of many artists, but most of them are those who perform instrumentals.
10 song albums are a rare occurrence nowadays. Artists mostly release singles or 3 song albums. How do you look at this new trend in the industry?
Many things are changing in the industry, and technology has added new dimensions to it. The audience's taste is also changing and they like visuals to go with their music. The industry changes with demands, so that's what is happening, it's inevitable. I will also be releasing a single with a music video titled "Bhalobasha Emoni."
What about your experience in singing for movies?
I have worked mostly for the background score of movies. Recently I worked in a project called "The Fake." Other than that, I have also performed and composed for a movie called "Kata" where I collaborated with Labonno, to lyrics by Zia Uddin Alam.
Apart from music, we have seen you in acting as well. Is there more to come from that arena?
I acted in a drama called "Unish Bochor Aagey" by Partho Sarkar. I hope to be a part time actor beside my singing career.
What are your future plans with music?
After finishing up with my A Levels, I plan to study abroad on the topic of music, preferably on pianos, hopefully in the UK or Canada.
