ICT grants first bail in July Uprising case
The International Crimes Tribunal-2 today granted bail to an accused on humanitarian grounds in a crimes against humanity case filed over the killings of five people in Lakshmipur during the July 2024 uprising.
This is the first time an accused has secured bail in a case linked to the July uprising.
The accused is Humayun Kabir Patwary, former president of the Awami League’s Lakshmipur Sadar unit.
Humayun was granted bail considering his health condition, as he is suffering from liver cirrhosis, according to the defence.
The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Md Nozrul Islam Chowdhury, passed the order after hearing a bail petition filed by the accused’s lawyer.
However, the tribunal imposed several conditions, including requiring Humayun to stay at the residential address he provided and prohibiting him from leaving his residence.
He has also been barred from communicating with the media or using social media.
The tribunal further directed that the accused must not tamper with evidence or contact any co-accused or prosecution witnesses during the bail period.
Apart from Humayun, two other accused are currently in jail in this case. They are Shaheen Alam and Md Salahuddin Chowdhury. All three are involved in Awami League politics.
