A woman has been sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment for filing a false rape case that led a man to spend nearly two months in jail.

Judge AKM Emdadul Haque of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Netrokona handed down the verdict this afternoon.

The court also fined Lipi Akter, 39, Tk 5,000, with three additional months in prison in default of the payment.

Advocate Nurul Kabir Rubel, public prosecutor for the tribunal, said Lipi was present in the dock when the verdict was delivered.

Lipi is a resident of Bikramshree village in Barhatta upazila of the district.

According to the case details, Lipi filed a rape case against Kamal Uddin, a resident of the same village, in 2008, claiming that she was eight months pregnant. Police subsequently arrested Kamal, who spent nearly two months in jail.

After the child was born, a DNA test was conducted to establish paternity. The test found no match, confirming that Kamal was not the child’s biological father.

Following a prolonged judicial process, the court acquitted Kamal of the rape charges in 2019.

He subsequently filed a counter-case against Lipi in 2020, seeking redress for his imprisonment on false charges. After a lengthy judicial process and examination of the evidence, the court found Lipi guilty and sentenced her today.
