17 killed in mob violence, 6 in political clashes in July: HRSS report
At least 17 people were killed and 51 injured in mob violence across the country in July, while six people died and 164 others were injured in 45 incidents of political violence, according to the Human Rights Support Society (HRSS).
The figures were presented in the organisation’s monthly human rights report, released Monday via press release.
The HRSS said the report was based on information from 16 national media outlets, its own data collection, and reports from local representatives.
Violence against women and children
- 258 women and girls faced violence in July.
- 95 were raped, including 61 under 18; 11 were gang‑raped.
- 78 faced sexual abuse, 40 of them children.
- One person was killed and six injured in dowry‑related violence.
- 45 women were killed and 10 injured in domestic violence; 23 died by suicide after abuse.
- 180 children faced abuse; 34 died and 146 suffered physical or mental harm.
Mob violence
At least 49 incidents occurred over allegations of theft, robbery, mugging, verbal disputes, attempts to establish local dominance, and “hurting religious sentiments,” the report said.
Political violence
The HRSS noted political violence declined compared to June, when nine were killed and 346 injured in 58 incidents.
- Two killed and 48 injured in 14 BNP internal conflicts.
- 44 injured in six BNP-Jamaat clashes.
- 13 injured in three BNP-Awami League clashes.
- 38 injured in five BNP-National Citizen Party clashes.
- 16 injured in 14 clashes between BNP and other parties.
- Three killed and five injured in three other incidents.
Of the six killed, three were BNP members and three belonged to JSS and UPDF. Seven attacks by criminals left five political activists dead and two injured; four of the dead were BNP members and one was from the Awami League. At least 15 activists were shot.
Arrests and press freedom
9,157 people were arrested in 193 political and other incidents, including 318 Awami League members, 28 BNP members, seven NCP members and one Jamaat member.

- 55 journalists faced abuse in 36 incidents; three detained, 14 accused in eight cases.
- Law enforcement obstructed nine meetings and rallies, leaving 20 injured.
- Eight incidents of interference with freedom of expression led to eight detentions and eight cases against 25 people.
- 17 accused in three cases under the Cyber Security Ordinance, 2025; three detained.
Custody deaths and workers’ rights
- Three people died in custody in July -- two in police custody and one under the Detective Branch.
- 23 workers killed and 72 injured in 79 incidents of violence.
- 55 workers died in workplace accidents due to unsafe conditions and lack of protective equipment.
