Lightning kills siblings in Bogura

Two brothers were killed in a lightning strike in Bogura's Sariakandi upazila yesterday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Monmat Halder, 45, and Sabuj Halder, 32, of Baraitali village under Kazipara upazila of Sirajganj. They used to catch fish in the Jamuna river and sell those at Debdanga Mathurapara fish market in Sariakandi upazila.

The incident occurred around 3:30pm at the fish market during a storm with drizzle, thunder and lightning, said Jamilur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sarikandi Police Station, quoting witnesses.

"The brothers went to secure their boat at the riverbank when a lightning struck a bamboo log that they were holding. They immediately fell into water from their boat. Locals rushed to rescue them but found them dead," said the OC. The bodies will be handed over to family members, he added.
