Man arrested for throwing acid on would-be bride in Cox’s Bazar

Miscreants threw acid on a young woman on the day of her engagement in Ramu upazila of Cox's Bazar.

The incident occurred early yesterday in Majhirkata village, few hours before the engagement, reports our local correspondent quoting Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Anwarul Alam of Ramu Police Station.

Police last night arrested Nurul Abshar Bhutto (26), of the same village, in this connection, the OC said.

Around 4am on Tuesday, Bhutto and another man threw acid on Tayyaba Begum (18), while she was going to the washroom with her mother, police said quoting the case statement.

Injured Tayyaba was rushed to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital.

"Victim's right eye has been badly injured; she is under the observation of an eye specialist," Shaheem Md Abdur Rahman Chowdhury, resident medical officer of the hospital, said.

Victim's father Mozaffar Ahmed said that Bhutto has been harassing them since they arranged Tayyaba's marriage with a man from a nearby village.

Bhutto with his men had visited the would-be groom's place and threatened him to not marry Tayyaba, he said.

Mozaffar alerted the local union parishad member over this, he added.

UP member Kamal Hossain said that after receiving complaints from Mozaffar, they decided to hold a meeting to resolve the issue. But the incident happened before the meeting could take place.

Police were trying to arrest the second person involved in the attack, the OC added.
