A housewife was killed allegedly by her husband at their residence at Nalapara in the port city on Wednesday night. The deceased, Sumi Chowdhury, 22, daughter of Kanak Chowdhury of the district's Raozan upazila was an honours student of Government City College. Police arrested her husband Joy Prakash Chowdhury, a visiting teacher of Marine Fisheries Academy College, in connection with the murder. Sumi's cousin Santosh Kumar Chowdhury said, “Around 9:00pm, Sumi's father-in-law Dani Kumar Chowdhury told her family over phone that Sumi was sick and was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.” “Arriving at the hospital, we found Sumi dead and there was a mark of hanging bruise around her neck,” Santosh said. Mezbah Uddin, sub-inspector (SI) of Double Mooring Police Station, also said there was a mark of “hanging bruise” around the deceased's neck. Police and family members of the deceased suspect that Sumi was killed by her husband, the SI said. Sumi and Joy got married on February 24 last year. However, after marriage, Joy often tortured Sumi and even attempted to kill her several times earlier, said Santosh.
