3 held with foreign currencies at airport

Rapid Action Battalion members arrested three people from Shahjalal International Airport on Wednesday night for their attempt to smuggle foreign currencies worth Tk 11.77 crore. The arrestees are Mosharraf Hossain, 30, of Bondor in Narayanganj, Md Mamun Al Azad alias Sumon, 35, of Ashkona in Dhaka and Md Jewel Hossain, 27, of Mehendiganj in Barisal. Acting on a tip-off, a team of Rab-1 arrested the trio in front of Departure Gate-1 around 8:00pm and seized the currencies from their possession. The currencies include UK pound, US dollar, Saudi riyal, UAE dirham, said Rab officials. Sumon, proprietor of Al Amin Money Exchange in city's Uttara, own the currencies while Mosharraf was departing for New York by an Arab Emirates flight, they said, adding that Jewel was the driver of Sumon. Abdul Baten, assistant superintendent of police, said Mosharraf and Sumon are the members of an international money-siphoning network.
