Govt to build 11,264 flats for middle class

The government will construct 11,264 new flats at Mirpur in the city for low and middle-income people. The government is going to construct the flats to meet the cumulative residential crisis in Dhaka city, said an official of the Planning Commission. He said 15 categories of people, including journalists, farmers, challenged, tribal and freedom fighters, will be entitled for the flats. After getting flats through lottery, flat winners will have to pay 25 percent down payment of total money and the rest amount would be installments, he added. The project titled 'construction of Swapnanagar Residential Flat' at Sector-9 in Mirpur involving approximate Tk 5,500 crore. National Housing Authority would implement the project by 2014. Under the project, three categories of flats will be constructed in 146 acres of land. In the first category, a total of 69 buildings, each 12th floor with single basement, would be constructed having 6,072 flats sizing 1,250 square feet each. The second category will have 35 buildings, each 12th floor with single basement, would be constructed having 3,080 flats sizing 1,066 square feet each. Besides, 24 buildings, each 12th floor with single basement, would be constructed having 2,112 flats sizing 800 square feet in each. Recently, the Planning Commission held a special meeting of the evaluation committee and formed a committee to finalise the rules and regulations for the flat distribution process. The committee has been asked to submit its report within 15 working days. The Planning Commission sources said the project is going to start soon after 16 years as different complexities have already been solved. Sources said the government approved the project in 1995 to construct plots. Later, it decided to construct flat through revised its some components.
