Painters in Chittagong are passing busy hours to complete their works ahead of a nine-day painting exhibition beginning on March 31 at the Institute of Fine Arts, Chittagong University. The painting festival is a part of “Odommo Chattagram” (Indomitable Chittagong), a special initiative by The Daily Star to showcase Chittagong, the country's second largest city. A total of 45 paintings of some prominent artists will be displayed, said Mohd Jashim Uddin, an associate professor and director of the Institute of Fine Arts. “We are almost prepared for the exhibition. Already 40 painters have submitted their works, and we hope to receive the remaining ones in a few days”, he said. The exhibition will end on April 8. Jashim Uddin, who is also a participant, said his works described figures of object in light and dark. "Reflection" is the title of the paintings, he added. During the exhibition, visitors will enjoy the exclusive creations of noted artists like Prof Monsur Ul Karim, Nasim Banu, Dr Fayejul Azim, Alok Roy, Shoumen Das, Syed Saiful Kabir, Dilara Begum Jolly, Ahmed Newaz, and Shah Mohd Ansar Ali. “I have tried to focus on the beauty of nature and its relations to love, artist Shoumen Das said. "I think nature is the real source for painting. We take theme, colour, and almost everything from nature". Das, also an assistant professor at the Institute of Fine Arts, said “It's an excellent initiative by The Daily Star which will inspire students to improve the quality of their works. "It will also help to widen the arena of cultural activities not only in Chittagong but also in the whole country. I personally appreciate The Daily Star for taking such kind of initiative”. Uttam Kumar Barua, another participant of the exhibition and assistant professor of the fine arts institute, said he had named his art work as “Feelings of Nature”. “Chittagong is a beautiful green calm city. As “Odommo Chattagram” is a programme based on Chittagong, I tried to present the natural beauty of Chittagong in my paintings”, he said.
