Journalists formed a human chain in front of Dinajpur Press Club yesterday protesting assault on two reporters of a private TV channel in Baderganj upazila of Rangpur district on July 4. Addressing a rally at the venue, they demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment to those involved in the attack on the two reporters and condemned harassment of The Daily Star Dinajpur correspondent by a mobile court in Biral upazila of the district on July 2. Johnson Mahbub, staff reporter of Ekushey Television (ETV), and its Rangpur correspondent Liakat Badal came under attack when they went to Kashiganj village in Modhupur union of Baderganj upazila on July 4 to collect news about torture on two women at the village following an arbitration on June 26. A gang beat up the ETV reporters at the instructions of Modhupur Union Parishad Chairman Aynal Haque, UP member Abdul Kader and Awami League and BNP leaders of the union and then confined them to a house at the village. The Daily Star Dinajpur correspondent Kongkon Karmaker was harassed by a mobile court during the election to Dharmapur Union Parishad in Biral Upazila on July 2. The mobile court intercepted Kongkon while he was going to Kaliganj village in the union riding his motorbike to cover UP election. After checking the ID card issued by the district election office, the court let him go. But five minutes later, the same court stopped Kongkon, chasing about two kilometers and checked necessary papers relating to registration of his motorbike and driving licence for half an hour. Kongkon lodged a written complaint regarding the incident with Dinajpur deputy commissioner the following day.
