Tangail municipal councillors assault 2 PDB engineers
Two senior engineers of Power Development Board (PDB) were allegedly assaulted by a few some councillors of Tangail municipality at local PDB office yesterday.
They are superintending Engineer Mohammad Solaiman and Executive Engineer Zafar Ahmed.
Protesting the incident, PDB officials and employees in the district have decided to go on mass leave.
Abdur Rashid, an office assistant of Tangail PDB, told this correspondent that some councillors of Tangail municipality arrived at the PDB office at Mymensingh Road in the town at 12:00 noon and entered the executive engineer's room where a meeting of the engineers and officials was going on.
The councillors forced other officials and engineers out of the room, physically assaulted the two senior engineers and took them to Tangail municipality office, he said.
After talking with Mayor Shahidur Rahman Khan Mukti, the two engineers returned to the PDB office. Faruque Ahmed, executive engineer (distribution) of Tangail PDB, said they have already informed the high officials of the district administration about the incident.
Assaulted Executive Engineer (sales and distribution) Zafar Ahmed said the mayor had earlier asked him to remove some roadside electric poles from Biswas Betka area in the town for road extension work.
“As we have a departmental procedure to do the job, I informed the mayor of the matter through a letter two days ago. It might have made the councillors angry” he added.
Contacted, Mayor Shahidur Rahman Khan Mukti said he knew nothing about assault on the engineers by the councillors.
He said the PDB officials are involved in corruption. They made a false allegation against the councillors to hide their immoral act, the mayor added.
Abdul Latif, central unit vice-president of Bangladesh Jatiya Bidyut Sramik League, and Rafiqul Islam, president of Tangail district unit, said they have decided to take a mass leave demanding punishment of those involved in assaulting the two senior engineers."
