More candidates vow to fight corruption
They also pledge to work for people

Mayoral candidates in Gobindaganj municipality in Gaibandha and Badarganj municipality in Rangpur district yesterday vowed to stand against all kinds of crime and corruption and sicerely work for the welfare of people. In a view exchanging meeting organised by upazila unit of Sushashoner Jonney Nagarik-Sujan (Citizens for Good Governance) at Gobindaganj upazila auditorium, three mayoral candidates in the municipality yesterday made written commitment to stand against corruption and not to involve in corrupt practice themselves, reports our Gaibandha correspondent. The mayoral candidates local Awami League (AL) leader Ataur Rahman, another AL leader Moksed Ali Badu and Workers Party leader Abdul Matin Mollah attended the meeting presided over by Momtajuddin, president of Gobindagnaj unit of Sujon, while Dr Badiul Alam Majumder, general secretary of central Sujon, was present as the chief guest. BNP-backed mayoral candidate 0Faruk Ahmed did not join the meeting. The three candidates pledged before the audience that they would do everything for the welfare of the people, strengthen local administration to check crimes and play active role to stop stalking and repression on women, if elected. They also made commitment to take special care for the children and ensure hundred percent attendance in primary schools. They will reform local government organisations introducing transparency in all works and work for empowering women, they said. Gobindaganj Upazila Parishad Chairman Abul Kalam Azad and UNO Abdul Wahed spoke on the occasion, among others. Our Rangpur correspondent adds: Four mayoral candidates in Badarganj municipality yesterday pledged to fight for eradication of drug, violence, extortion and corruption if they are elected. At a programme styled "Meet the People" jointly organised by Sujan and Badarganj Press Club at Badarganj Bijoy Mancha, they made commitment not to influence the voters by money and musclemen in the name of campaign. Azizul Hoque, contesting the election with the symbol lock, Uttom Kumar (symbol wall clock), Sarwar Jahan Manik (symbol pineapple) and Mosharraf Hossain (symbol television) were present on the occasion. Another candidate Selim Lohani did not attend the programme. Azizul Hoque pledged that if voted to Badarganj municipality mayoral post, he would take initiative to develop infrastructure, mainly roads, canals and bridge to mitigate sufferings of town dwellers. Admitting his limitations to fulfil earlier election commitments, former mayor of Badarganj municipality Uttom Kumar Saha appealed to the people to elect him for the next term so that he can complete half-done projects. Sujan General Secretary Badiul Alam Mojumder conducted the oath for the voters and mayoral candidates at the meeting.
