The much expected construction work of Bahodderhat flyover is to begin next week after eight months of it's foundation stone laying by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on January 2. Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) will implement the project of Tk 86 crore from its own fund. CDA sources said implementation of the project is being delayed due to change in plan and soil test twice. They said earlier CDA decided to build the flyover in “Y” shape and start from Rowson boarding point of Bahodderhat to finish at two points such as Bahodderhat Bus Terminal and Ek (one) Kilometre Area. Later, CDA cancelled the Bus Terminal portion and decided to start constructing from Rowson Boarding Point to Ek Kilometre Area in the face of criticism from the media and experts. CDA appointed former vice-chancellor of Chittagong University Of Engineering and Technology (Cuet) Mozammel Haque to carry out the soil test as the department of housing and public works, Ctg had failed to give a correct report. Change of plan and soil test being done twice took a long time, delaying the start of the construction work, they added. CDA Chairman Abdus Salam in this regard told The Daily Star on Sunday that it took time for processing. He said the construction work would begin within three to four days in full swing and will be finished within next two years. Denying the allegation of wrong soil test done by the housing and public works department, he said we are rechecking the test reports by “Mrittika” of Mozammel. About the flyover, CDA chairman said it will be a turning point in the communications system of the port city, contributing to reducing the traffic jam to a greater extent. “I thank the prime minister and her government for approval of three flyovers for the port city and hope to start construction work of two other flyovers within a very short time,” he said. Project Director (PD) Habibur Rahman said the total length of the four-lane Bahodderhat flyover will be 1,332 metres with a width of 14 metres. Each lane will be of 3.35 metres, he added. “To avoid any obstacle and hindrance to removing underground water and gas pipelines, power cables lines and BTCL lines, we formed a monitoring committee of nine members with representatives from related service sectors like Wasa, traffic department of police and PDB,” he said. “We will give highest priority to avoid traffic jam during the construction work. We won't begin the whole work of the project at a time but complete our work on slot basis,” he added. CDA appointed Sarm Associates Ltd and Management Consultant Ltd jointly as the consultants for the project. Earlier, Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) approved projects to construct three flyovers in port city on December 31 of 2009. Cabinet committee on purchase okayed the tender of Meer Akhter-Parisha (JV) for the Bahodderhat flyover on October 24. A total of 10 construction firms submitted tenders. Meer Akhter-Parisha(JV) got the work order as the lowest bidder.
