Barisal port authorities restricted movement of motor launches up to 65 feet long in 29 routes of Barisal region until further order after meteorological department asked port authorities to hoist cautionary signal No 2 yesterday noon. Plying of motor launches with less than 65 feet length has been suspended due to adverse weather, said Kazi Wakil Newaz, BIWTA deputy director working at Barisal port. Besides, other types of water transports including triple deck launches plying Barisal-Dhaka route have been asked to move cautiously, he added. Cloudy weather and light to moderate rainfall accompanied by gusty wind that started yesterday morning disturbed normal life in Barisal region as there is deep convection over the North Bay. However, the people welcomed the rainfall as it helped to lessen the sweltering heat that prevailed during the past few days. Rainfall of 8.4 mm was recorded from 6:00am to 4:00pm. Squally weather may affect the maritime ports and coastal areas with rough sea and tidal bore higher than usual, said Prodip Kumar, officer of Kalapara radar station. All fishing boats in North Bay and deep sea have been advised to come close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice, officials said. The weather is likely to improve within next 48 hours when the influence of the new moon and convection subsides, said sources at local Met office.
