Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) authorities yesterday demolished 18 illegal concrete structures including three markets on Upashahar New Market-Cantonment Road in Housing Estate area of the city. “Taking opportunity of the limitations of manpower and equipment of the corporation, some land grabbers became so irresponsible that they erected quite strong concrete structures on government land,” said RCC's Executive Magistrate M Sadekul Islam as he was leading the drive. Residents of the posh area expressed their satisfaction over the drive. Two of the affected people, however, complained that their legal constructions were also demolished along with illegal ones. "The corporation broke law by demolishing my shop near the New Market as my legal suit against the corporation over the piece of land is still under trial," Rawshan Ara, one of the two persons, told reporters. Refuting the allegations, Magistrate M Sadekul Islam said, “We demolished buildings after checking documents properly.” The drive that began last month for developing the city's environment and cleaning the footpath for the convenience of pedestrians and vehicles on city roads will continue until October 24, officials said.
